Frequently Asked Questions
on the Basic Game

When and how do I move Samurai?

  • Own Samurai may be moved before the execution of each own authorization card.

  • You may move all your Samurai as far as you wish, as long as you pay the costs.

  • Own Samurai may even be moved if they will not take part in the coming actions.

  • You may even move if not a single Official was placed at the current authorization card.

  • You may of course move additional Samurai at your expense before the »Travel« action.

  • Any space may contain any number of Samurai, no matter their color, even none.

  • You may never move the other players' Samurai.

How do I use the »Travel« action?

  • For each Official, you decide independently and one by one if this Official shall either [A] be placed onto a Gate space on the plan, or if [B] he shall be used to move 1-2 own Samurai on the plan as far as you wish for free.

  • Even Samurai that have just been placed on the plan using [A] can subsequently and immediately be moved by [B].

  • You may not move the merchant for free during the »Travel« action.

When may I move the merchant?

  • At any time when you may move your own Samurai at your expense (see above).

  • You may move the merchant even if the coming action is not »Trading«.

  • You may not move the merchant for free during the »Travel« action.

How do I trade?

The current merchant card on the plan offers two different trading options:

[1] Pay money to get resources (wood, stone, rice). Depending on the quantity stated on the card, you can buy up to 2 or 3 pieces, each for the given price (e.g. 1-2× wood for 2 Ryo per piece).

[2] Pay resources / money to get 1 power point.
  • If you activate a Trading action by placing one Official to the Trading action card and bringing together at least one of your Samurai and the Merchant anywhere on the plan, you can choose one of the options (either [1] or [2]).

  • If you place two Officials to the Trading card and bring at least two of your Samurai together with the Merchant, you can choose from the two options twice (either the same option twice or each of the two options once).

  • If your Samurai and the Merchant meet in the city where your Trading Post is, you can choose both options ([1] and [2]) per Trading action.

  • If you place 2 Officials to the Trading action card and have 2 Samurai together with the Merchant and your Trading Post, you can choose each option up to twice.

    besitzt, darf dort Festungen errichten.

  • Kontore zählen in beiden Fällen nicht.

How do I build a fortress?

  • Fortresses may be erected in all cities as well as in Edo.

  • For every 2 houses existing in a city (no matter which player owns them), one fortress may be built in that city.

  • A player may build a fortress in a city only if he owns at least 1 house in that city.

  • In both cases, trading posts do not count.

How do Special Authorization Cards work?

  • Cards offering an extra yield of +1 or ×2 do this separately for each action performed, i.e. for each Samurai on the plan that gains a yield.

  • Cards allowing to build with less expenses do this once for each building erected.

Do I get income at the end of the game?

  • Yes, of course! But if players will obviously not reach 50 (or 100, 150, …) Ryo, you can omit the calculation of their income.
